The soil wall solar greenhouse is very popular in certain regions due to its excellent insulation and practicality.
During cold winters, even when the outside temperature drops below -10°C, the temperature inside the greenhouse can remain above 13°C at night without any artificial heating.
Construction of soil wall greenhouse
The earth wall is the heart of this type of greenhouse.
The north, east and west sides of the greenhouse are made up of earth walls, while the south side (the sunny side) has a large sloping surface covered with translucent plastic film.
Construction of the clay wall:
The soil used for the walls is sourced locally.
Each layer of earth is compacted and when the desired height is reached, an excavator 'cuts' the earth wall into shape.
The thicker the wall, the better the greenhouse's insulation and heat retention properties.
Although the earth wall has great insulating properties, it may not be visually appealing.
However, with surface treatment, the wall is both strengthened and aesthetically improved.
Exterior of the greenhouse
The interior is spacious.
Typically, the floor of the greenhouse is about 0.5 to 1 metre lower than the surrounding outdoor ground level.
This design makes better use of the lower soil temperature in winter, while reducing heat loss to the outside.
